 About Me

I've been a client of Shirley's for a while now and I am so impressed, I offered to tell my story on her website. I've still got a long way to go, but you can follow my progress here in my online diary.
Professional golfers and the top amateurs play massive tournaments week in and week out. But for me playing off 5, representing my county at County Week in June is the entire focus of my golfing year. I'd been thinking about coming to see Shirley for a while because I need to be able to use the same relaxed swing playing into the green that I only seem to be able to do when I'm laying up. But then, just 10 ½ weeks before County Week, I broke my wrist. I was terrified that breaking both my radius and ulna in a fall would mean that I wouldn't be fit in time. Playing County Week means the world to me. I was prepared to try anything to make me mend more quickly so I booked an appointment with Shirley.

 Session 1 - Pain Management

In my first session, I was still in a lot of pain, so we focussed on pain management and healing. I had always been very sceptical about hypnotherapy, but I desperately wanted it to work. Its much easier to trust something you understand, so Shirley patiently answered my questions and explained all the science to me. I have to say, it was amazing. You are not "under" as such, and can hear everything going on around you. My mind wandered off at times, but Shirley reassured me that this is quite normal. She taught me relaxation techniques so I could tap into the power of my sub conscious and focus my energy into my broken bones. She got me to imagine the safest place I could, and I pictured myself in our first flat, which my husband and I bought in 1991. We left there 15 years ago, but I could remember everything so clearly, even the stain on the carpet where the radiator leaked! Then we focussed back on my arm and protecting it and I somehow knew it was my husband looking after me. I felt very very safe and it was quite an emotional experience. But I left the session amazed at what I had learned. I never paused for breath in the car once on the way home, as I gushed out all the details.

Session 2 - Mind Factor Training

The pain is a lot better now as my wrist is recovering, so session 2 was all about golf. Shirley helped me do a lot of preparation for my second session. This is where she is so good - its not just the hour you spend with her that she is helping you, its all the time in between sessions as well. We put together a practice plan of things I would be able to do while still in plaster: including lining up, thinking about golf, and weight transference. We talked a lot about my pre-shot routine and the strengths and weaknesses of my game. Session 2 just blew me away! While I was relaxed, Shirley talked to me about all the things that make my game what it is. She remembers absolutely everything, all the little details we had talked about in the previous session, which is incredibly reassuring for some reason.

I had to play my home course in my head, visualising and doing the pre-shot routine Shirley had helped me put together. I knew I was taking absolutely ages, and so told Shirley when I'd done the front 9, expecting her to say we'd do the back 9 on the next session. Not at all, I "played" the whole course. I cannot believe the results. My club and shot selection were perfect, like someone with the ultimate golf brain was telling me what to do!! But actually it was me doing it! I just never knew I knew all this stuff about my game until Shirley helped me tap into my sub conscious. For example, our 18th hole is a long uphill par 4. I'm quite long off the tee, so my ball often ends up under the huge plane tree to the right of the fairway. In my virtual game, I took a 3 wood off the tee. It is so obviously the right play, but I'd never thought of it before, assuming I had to take driver for length. We spent a lot of time on positive thinking, and Shirley helped me remembering my best ever rounds of golf, and I keep going back to one in particular - where I barely hit a fairway, only hit 2 greens in regulation the whole round, but still shot 1 over par. Thinking about that round over and over, Shirley made me trust myself. I had been putting pressure on myself to hit greens in regulation so I could make par, so I had to have the shortest possible approach shot, so I had to have the longest possible tee shot. Wrong! Now I am using the techniques Shirley taught me to think about playing longer irons into greens so I can play the safer shot off the tee. Since session 2 I have "played" lots of courses and made lots of very good decisions. I play a course in my head every morning before I get out of bed, and I am finding it easy to make the right choices. I have walked my own course and visualised all my new shots. Now I can't wait to get out playing and put it into practice.

 Session 3 - Centering

Shirley had more practice techniques and exercises for me this week. With only a week left to go in plaster, I feel I'm ready to start some physical work. We did lots more mental practice, and under Shirley's guidance, I am getting better and better at visualisation. While I was in the relaxed state we covered more of my pre-shot routine and I am now able to watch the shot I am about to play being taken. Its fantastic. I have a friend who is a brilliant golfer, she plays off +1 with a swing to die for. When Shirley relaxed me, I could see my friend playing the shot, then I imagined myself copying it exactly. It was incredible. I am so confident that when I can start playing again that I will be able to do this on the course. Normally, Shirley will prepare practice routines for clients that they can do between sessions, but because I cannot do any physical practice, she has had to put a lot of effort into creating mental practices for me. They are all working really well, and its becoming second nature.

We also did some physical work in the session. Shirley taught me how to "centre" Its awesome and so simple. Basically, you focus all your energy to your core. I have to do it standing up, and I found it very easy to learn. I can feel the power in my stance, and I am so well balanced. I feel every part of me is aligned correctly, and it will be so easy to swing a club from here. I'm itching to be out there again. I've been centering in the shower every morning and I can literally do it at will now. It is taking me longer and longer to get ready for work in the morning now with all the practice I'm doing, but I really feel its working.

The last part of the session was the hardest - Shirley asked my sub conscious whether I would be fit in time. I willed the answer to be YES, but it wasn't. It wasn't a definite NO, but it was more no than yes. I thought I would be absolutely devastated, but I wasn't. Shirley helped me manage the disappointment. Where my mindset is now is that I still desperately want my wrist to be better in time but I don't want to let my team mates down by playing if its not. I know that in the long term, I will be a better golfer, and that means that I will still be able to contribute a huge amount to the team, just may not be this year. In the short term, my contribution may have to be off the course.

 Session 4 - Fovial Vision

My plaster is now off, but I'm not ready for the golf course yet. Shirley admitted to me that she has to work really hard to prepare for my sessions, because I can't do the physical practice in between sessions like her other clients. I rather like that - knowing that I'm getting special treatment from my Mind Factor Coach. I can, however do mental practice, and I have been doing plenty of that.

I had no idea what Shirley would have in store for me this week. I thought we'd probably be recapping on what I'd learned previously, but she had more goodies up her sleeve for me. This week we did fovial vision. Shirley had intended to teach me how to switch out of fovial vision into peripheral vision in between shots so that I could switch my concentration on and off. We discovered that I actually exist naturally in the peripheral vision state, which is apparently quite unusual. But it does explain why I am so bad at lining up. I've always known that I am bad at lining up, but I've never really understood why until now. I had wrongly assumed it is because I've got bad eyesight.

So Shirley taught me how to switch down into fovial vision. It was really hard. Everything she has taught me so far, I have been able to pick up relatively easily, but this I found really really difficult. When I did get it right though, the results were amazing. I now have to completely change the way I line up, and we spent the rest of the session practising that together so I would be able to do it by myself. I can!! I went to hit balls for the first time in 8 weeks, and after getting over the initial excitement of actually having a club in my hand, I got down to some serious work. I hit several shots, and scored myself on length, line, tempo, result and pain. Pain scored highly, but then I shouldn't really be playing yet. But when I reviewed my other statistics, I was really really pleased. I got 9 or 10 out of 10 for line almost every time, which is unheard of for me! The only time I didn't was because I hit a bad shot. I was very happy with my direction. I did worry that I am still having to work very hard on my fovial vision, so my pre-shot routine is taking a long time, but Shirley assures me that the better I get at it, the quicker it will be. I know that's true because I can now centre in a matter of nanoseconds.

 After The Sessions

I am really looking forward to playing golf now. Shirley and I are going to play a few social holes beforehand and I know she is going to be watching me like a hawk to check that I'm doing all the things I've been taught. I promise I'll try! The last few months have been hard without any golf, but even doing the little physical exercise I am now, I can really see the difference in the mental side of my game. I now can't wait to have a medal card in my hand, and I can't remember the last time I thought that.
